Don’t forget to turtle up! This week, Donovan and I discuss the first four episodes of Physical: 100 Season 2 — Underground, the triumphant return of the greatest show on TV. Despite loving the first season, we definitely had issues with the production and the ambitious but inevitably uncomfortable mission statement as it pertains to gender. Did they listen?

  1. I was looking forward to your coverage of Physical 100 S2. I was also disappointed that the quest design remains largely that whoever has the most mass wins. The number of women contestants is actually pretty close to S1, but I feel like there has been even less coverage. I too would like to see it much closer to 50/50. Quest 0 was not bad – essentially how far can you run in 20 minutes. Since the top few contestants did over 5km, I checked the records for that distance and the time we see were roughly 50% more than the worlds best, and women runners at that distance are consistently a bit slower than men which seems to be more about stride length than anything. I do think that that quest was relatively fair. Quest 1 was just repeat of a poorly designed quest from S1 but with more violence permitted and encouraged. My real ire was for Quest 2 where team Stungun essentially just mugged the other team and was lauded for it. Yay? I’ll still be watching, but the design has gone pretty much the opposite direction of where I’d hoped it would.

    1. I appreciate you doing that research — reminds me of my headspace for season one. Yeah, I’m only on episode five, which was a real bummer. And it’s like, I want to enjoy this show and these dudes, but it’s hard to do that through the general disrespect being expressed here. The fixes wouldn’t be that hard
