This severe-sounding K-drama is coming up this year, the next major project for Lim Ji-yeon (The Glory). Based on a webcomic called Kookminsahyungtopyo, I guess, the plot synopsis is provided by Asian Wiki:
Dog Mask’s identity is unknown. When heinous criminals avoid punishment from the law, all citizens over 18 years old receive a text message polling them on whether that person should receive the death penalty. If more than 50% respond in favor of the death penalty, that person is killed by Dog Mask. Meanwhile, the police chase after Dog Mask and three people become involved.
Lim Yi-yeon plays a police officer, much like she did in Welcome 2 Life, which I’m currently enjoying. Of course, that one’s a comedy, and she’s extremely over the top, constantly shouting and beating up Rain. This one sounds more like a classic Korean social satire, with shades of anime like Psycho Pass and Paranoia Agent. It’s directed by Park Shin-woo, who did the high-profile It’s Okay to Not Be Okay, and co-written by the original webcomic scribes and Jo Yoon-young, whose work I can’t say I’m familiar with beyond Moon Lovers with IU.
National Death Penalty Vote (or whatever it’ll end up being called), premieres on May 15, 2023.
Ooooooooh 👀
